Just like with your CV, your LinkedIn should position you apart from the 100s of other applicants in the job market by clearly demonstrating what you can offer employers.

How does LinkedIn differ from your CV?

  • You have the luxury of space, less formality and a more human approach.

  • Anyone can look at your LinkedIn profile, so you must think broader.

  • There’s more opportunity to make an impact visually through imagery.

  • Your face is on there, so you have the opportunity of making a personal connection.

  • You’ll need to find the right balance of being the optimal next candidate and being the ideal colleague that everyone wants to know – you don’t want to rub colleagues up the wrong way!

  • There’s more of an opportunity for creativity, persona and branding on your LinkedIn.

How to make the most of your LinkedIn

A strong, authentic personal brand is a highly beneficial asset in today’s job competitive market. It helps job seekers stand out, demonstrate their unique value, and build trust with potential employers.

So what should you do to effectively position yourself on LinkedIn to attract career opportunities?

Start with Self-Awareness:

Reflect on your identity, skills, values and goals.

Answer the “Who am I?”, “What do I do?”, and “Why does it matter?” questions – these form the foundation of a compelling personal brand.

Define Your Unique Value Proposition (UVP):

Identify what sets you apart – be it skills, experiences or achievements – and focus on these as early as you can in the ‘About’ section.

Becky suggests a paragraph or two detailing these, alluding to ways that back them up with ideally outstanding and/or consistent results or value-added actions – positioning yourself as a solution-oriented and successful professional.

Becky also suggests devising a number of different impactful bullet points that showcase your diversity and what you’re able to deliver. Try to incorporate different skills and figures into outcomes, thereby shouting about what you can do – whilst retaining confidentiality and/or sensitivity to companies’ strategies / goals.

Be Authentic and Consistent:

Developing and maintaining a coherent and genuine professional presence across LinkedIn and other digital touchpoints backs up your CV and demonstrates your attention to detail and high quality.

Engage Actively:

Find practical ways to increase visibility, such as posting content, commenting on industry topics and connecting with professionals, to build credibility and relationships.

Grow your Connections: LinkedIn is first and foremost a networking tool. Try to expand your network by connecting with as many ex-colleagues, friends, and family as possible.

Maximise your Group Memberships: You are allowed to join up to 50 groups and you are encouraged to do so. It adds additional keywords to your profile to help with search engine presence and can help you to connect with similar professionals within your industry.

Build your Recommendations: Receiving +10 recommendations will improve your profile visibility significantly – just ask – what have you got to lose! You can always say you’d return the favour. Go to your ‘Recommendations’ section and click the plus sign or ask directly on messages.

Post Regularly: You can simply share other, interesting posts you see or create your own (adding a picture/video will significantly improve your post performance and visibility). You could also copy links into your written posts, linking to interesting articles as this will automatically create an image, provided by that webpage.

Share Content: Don’t be shy. Share as much of your work examples/content as possible. Fully completed profiles can gain up to 20 times the amount of attention as incomplete profiles.

Final thoughts… Consistent and regular activity will help you explore a whole new world of opportunities and open many doors you never knew existed.
